Chapter 08: Taking Stock

You ready for this, A?”

“Of course I am,” she replied, readjusting the glasses on her face as she stopped in front of the tall building. The large 30-story office occupied much of the block and stood a dominant presence in Crestview. WET had not shown to be very subtle, but if ever Alexa needed a reminder, this enormous erection in the middle of the financial district would serve as such.

Alexa glanced up the street towards Kasper’s rented SUV. Metallic silver, she sighed. “Kinda sticking out like a sore thumb there, K. I know you’re still kinda new to the whole spy thing but Rule 1: Blend in.”

Chapter 07: First Light

“Morning.” Kasper smiled at Alexa as her eyes fluttered open. She was lying on her stomach beside his now empty spot on the bed and groaned at the sight of the bright sunlight shining through the window.

“What time is it?”

“8:30.”

“8:30? Why’d you let me sleep so late?”

Chapter 06: On the Run

They had been running and stumbling through the forest for what seemed like hours. Setting the pace the entire time, Alexa urged Kasper to keep moving forward. His lungs burned and his mouth was dry he doubted he could even swallow. Stumbling yet again, he just let himself collapse in exhaustion and Alexa moved towards him. “Get up, K, we have to get out of here.”

“Alexa…please. I…don’t think…I can…take…another step. Can we stop for a while? At least…so I can catch my breath?”

Chapter 04: No Good Deed

You are watching footage taken by onlookers of tonight’s brazen shootout in downtown St. Claire. Police are still piecing together the events that lead to two homicides and several local businesses being destroyed. What we’ve been able to gather is that there were three cars involved in a chase that began near Southbridge and Fairview. The suspects hopped onto the I-95 before ending up here at the Plaza. As you can see behind me, police have taped off the Crossway Bridge and traffic is being rerouted. What began as a shootout ended in an explosion and fire that decimated an entire city block just one mile north of the Civic center.

Chapter 03: Point Blank

“Keep moving!” Alexa shouted over her shoulder at the slowing Kasper. “My car’s just ahead.” She dove behind the wheel of her Audi and unlocked the door for him.

Out of breath and limping, he finally slid into the seat beside her and Alexa peeled away from the curb. “Don’t look now, A, but we’ve got company,” he sighed, noticing his SUV and a black Escalade merge behind them in the rearview. They fired at them and Alexa shouted for Kasper to get down as she rolled down her window to return fire, striking the front bumper of the lead vehicle.

Chapter 02: To Catch a Predator

“Hannah!” Gavin yelled, chasing after her as she quickly rushed towards her Audi. She grabbed a small, black duffel bag from beneath the spare tire in her trunk and tossed it onto the passenger seat. “Hannah, will you stop, please?”

“Gavin, get your family to a hotel and call the police.”

“And what are you going to do?”

“I have to find my friend.”

“Alright, then I’m coming with you.”

“No, you’re not. It’s too dangerous.”

“And how is it any safer for you?”

“It isn’t. But unlike you, I’ve had extensive training in combat, can you say the same?” she asked and waited for his response. “Like I said, get your family to a hotel. I’ll call you when I’m done.”

“Wait a second, that’s it? You’ll call when you’re done?”

Chapter 01: First Sign of Danger

“Is everyone alright?” Alexa asked, walking around each Stark and examining them for injuries.

“We’re fine, Hannah!” Travis nearly shouted as he and his family gathered in the kitchen. “Now would you please tell us what is going on? Who was just shooting at us?”

“Travis, there’s something you need to know,” she paused and listened intently.

“Continue,” Travis urged, frustrated and tired as he worried about his family’s safety. The lights cut out and both Melissa and Dylan cried.

“Shh, it’ll be ok,” Alexa said, doing her best to calm them.

“Don’t say that! You don’t know that for sure,” Melissa whined in response.

“Quiet!” Everyone stilled and Alexa glanced at the double glass doors near the back patio. “Someone’s coming.”

Season 2 Recap

Alexa is back to work and on a case that turns her stomach: the gang rape of a college student by four fraternity brothers. And after a disagreement with Travis on how to handle the case, Alexa is forced to offer the men a deal that would see them serving a mere three years behind bars.

Chapter 10: The Secret’s Out

“Baby, have you seen my file log? It’s a small, red book where I keep my cases listed. I thought I’d left it on the dresser but I don’t see it.” Gavin quietly grabbed the journal from the nightstand and set it beside her hand before going back to getting ready. “Thanks,” Alexa replied, watching him get dressed. “Hey, are you upset at me about something?”

“Nope! Why would you ask that?”

“I don’t know. It just seems like you’ve been avoiding me lately. And when we are in the same room, like now, you seem really withdrawn. Is everything alright?”
